The journey to establish the Salisbury (NC) Alumni Chapter began in August 1997, when two Kappa men, Calvin Suber and Dr. Christopher Wayne “Big Smoove” McNeil, initiated a discussion. Their conversations centered on supporting the Gamma Delta Chapter at Livingstone College and collaborating with local youth to enhance the community. In October 2002, they held a second discussion to explore options for forming an official Chapter or Association. Their vision was to benefit the Salisbury community through initiatives in education, health, and financial literacy. Proposed activities included:
Though unaware of these early discussions, Brother Maximillian B. Norwood began brainstorming the idea of chartering an alumni chapter in Salisbury. In 2014, after conversations with a few Gamma Delta Alumni brothers, Jeffery Henderson, Morris Wiggins, and Floyd Baker, Brother Maximillian B. Norwood received the encouragement he needed to pursue this dream. Together, they identified the best candidates to help bring this vision to life.
Brother Norwood’s dedication to the cause and his ability to rally support led to the renewal of this initiative, which began taking shape in 2014. Planning continued, and the first official in-person meeting took place at Miller Recreation Teen Center on June 8, 2024. This meeting followed a series of virtual discussions that began during the COVID-19 pandemic (2019-2020). These early virtual meetings allowed for the groundwork to be laid, ultimately leading to the chapter’s formal establishment.
The Salisbury (NC) Alumni Chapter now proudly serves its mission to uplift the Salisbury community through education, health initiatives, and financial empowerment. Brother Maximillian B. Norwood, who crossed the “Burning Sands” on February 28, 1997, at the Gamma Delta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., has been instrumental in transforming his vision into a thriving chapter that benefits both the fraternity and the broader community.
Every chapter begins with vision. The men who founded the Salisbury (NC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi turned that vision into reality—uniting brothers, strengthening our bond, and creating new opportunities for service and achievement.
